The Coventry are an Italian darkwave band founded in Bari in 2016. Inspired by the sounds of the eighties, but born in the nineties, they decide to express their ideas through music. The members of the band met in the spring of 2016 by pure chance in a pub and decided to share the love and passion for music, they are Mario Manfredi, Valerio Rivieccio, Adriana Colella and Giammarco Milella (guitarist until may 2018). They have two separate musical projects in fact Mario and Giammarco were The Resonance, post punk band with rough and raw sounds inspired above all by artists such as The Birthday Party and Joy Division, while Valerio and Adriana formed Terminal Front, an industrial duo with sounds close to those of Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly and Front 242.
The name The Coventry derives from HMS Coventry, a Royal Navy destroyer that sank during
the war in the Falklands. Their sound is characterized by the union of pounding drum machines and warm sounds of guitar and synthesizers that envelop a cold voice, which aim is to direct the listener to another dimension, distant real world in which hopes and changes are considered virtues coming from the acceptance of failure and despair.
The musical influences of the band members are many and all different from each other; Mario Manfredi has a literary background as regards the texts, in fact the main sources of inspiration are Morrissey, Daniel Ash and Nick Cave among the musical atrists and Oscar Wilde and Franz Kafka as regards literature. Very artistic is also the approach of Adriana Colella, who takes care of the graphics and artworks of the band referring to various artistic currents, from Bauhaus to futurism, while The Cure, Depeche Mode and the new wave of the 80s are the origin of the sounds of her synths. More technical and practical is the work of Valerio Rivieccio, who in addition to his role as a musician is involved in music production. His influences as a composer are mostly the aforementioned big names in the industrial sector but you can also find hints to the new wave of artists such as Simple Minds and Duran Duran.
